The Capcom Pro Tour is back in full swing for the Summer 2020. Due to the global circumstances regarding COVID-19, the procedure of qualification for the banner-leading Capcom Cup is taking place entirely through Street Fighter’s online capabilities, adding a new layer of complexity and consideration to an already-pressured tournament setting.

19 players are vying for a chance to take the Capcom Cup away from Derek “iDom” Ruffin. Ruffin automatically qualifies to this year’s Cup as 2019’s champion, with the rest of the chasing pack being made up of CPT tournament winners and a community-voted entrant from last year’s finalists.

Four of the aforementioned 18 spaces have already been occupied; Arman “Phenom” Hanjani, Youri “DR Mandrake” Bueno, Neil “SKZ” Chong and Gonzalo “Pikoro” Buleje enter as winners of their respective CPT events. With Western Europe’s first event on the horizon, Patchwork’s very own Anthony “GuN SLinGa” Phillips has his eyes firmly set on qualifying alongside the aforementioned winners as the champion of EU West.

As one of the premier Zeku players in the world, Phillips has driven the meta for an initially unexpected character to new heights alongside fellow British compatriot DC “Infexious” Coleman. Coming off of strong results from UFA and EGX, it seems the world’s current circumstances have paused GuN SLinGa’s portfolio of placements temporarily. However, the CPT Online Premier provides the perfect platform for Phillips to continue his successes.

Preparation is key for any player going into a tournament of this calibre, and GuN SLinGa is no different. When asked about his training regiment, it was evident that Phillips had a core learning structure focused on self-criticism. “I’ll sit and watch replays of my losses combined with replays of the top players in Europe to try and figure out patterns.” Phillips evidently sees himself as a student of the game and remains humble in his efforts to improve.

GuN SLinGa has always been seen as a confident player, and that confidence has cascaded into excitement for the upcoming CPT event. “I’m looking forward to fighting the top players; it’s always a game of chess”. When asked about his expectations for the event, Phillips kept it short, sweet and as positive as ever; “My aim for the Pro Tour is of course to win!”

GuN SLinGa has signed up alongside some of the greats of the game, including former EVO champion Olivier “Luffy” Hay, UK powerhouse Benjamin “Problem X” Simon and fellow Zeku comrade Infexious to name a few. Only 2 other British players have cracked the top 8 of a Capcom Cup before in Ryan Hart and the aforementioned Problem X. For GuN SLinGa, this could be the first step to achieving British eSports history.
